The Centre receives an Annual Grant towards the maintenance and upkeep of existing facilities.

The Council also provided financial assistance towards the provision of the additional 60 + car parking spaces in the upgraded car park.

The Leisure Centre manages Tir Na nOg playground and until recently the Bring Centre, on behalf of The Council.

The Bring Centre at the Leisure Centre (the 2^nd busiest in the County) was monitored by CCTV, maintained to a high standard by Leisure Centre Employees, open 7 days a week from 6 am until 10pm as per the agreement with Clare County Council. Bank Holidays were the only occasions that this service was not available. Its central location proved extremely popular with the public, especially, pedestrians and cyclists. Unfortunately the same safe access, particularly for pedestrian and cyclists is not available on the approach roads to Smithstown Recycling Centre.

Shannon Leisure Centre endeavoured to accommodate the retention of the Bring Centre at the Leisure Centre.

Working with The Council it was agreed to relocate the Banks to a purpose built area at the rear of the Swimming Pool building. In accordance with the Councils specifications the contractor proceeded to prepare the designated area.

There was a requirement to strengthen the turning area in the car park to accommodate HGVs servicing the banks. Unfortunately The Council decided that due to the costs associated with this work they would relocate the Bring Centre away from The Leisure Centre.

The Councils decision came too late to stop the work on the proposed plinth which was completed and is still available should The Council reconsider its decision to relocate to the Recycling Centre at Smithstown.

The Chairperson and Members of The Board of The Leisure Centre recognise and appreciate the contribution and support of The Council in all its endeavours and looks forward to continuing to co-operate and work in partnership with Clare County Council on behalf of the Community.

Two French Professional Basketball players will be visiting Shannon Swimming and Leisure Centre to conduct a training weekend with Shannon Jets Director of Coaching, Mike Hickey and Professional Basketball player Jason Killeen.

Jonathan Radjouki and Louis Trohel played with Jason Killeen in France last season. Jason informed them of the off-season training programme that he was conducting at Shannon Swimming and Leisure Centre under the guidance of Shannon Jets, Director of Coaching Mike Hickey.

Jason believes that the facilities at SS&LC are perfect for high intensity training and the two French players have decided to fly over for an intense weekend of training before they start their pre-season training in France. Mike Hickey has designed an intense weekend of training for them.

Jason, Jonathon and Louis possess all of the characteristics of a professional Basketball player. They apply a very positive attitude to everything that they do. They have the discipline required to train hard and a follow a healthy nutrition plan. They are highly self motivated and train very hard.

On Saturday, 26 Jul at 11.00 Local Shannon people will get an opportunity to watch the training session and to meet the professional Basketball players. The young High Performance Athletes who are undergoing training at SS&LC will also get an opportunity to train with the Professional Basketball Players. After the training session, the young athletes will get a chance to discuss all of the aspect that is required to be a professional athlete.

 Jason Killeen

6’ 10”, Jason Killeen is from Limerick. He went to High School and college in the USA and after graduation he became a professional Basketball player.

Jason is currently a key player of the Ireland’s Superleague Select Basketball Team. Jason played Division 1 Basketball in NCAA in America. He also played professionally in France, Malaysia and England. Jason has received many offers from clubs in Ireland, France and Britain who are actively seeking him to play with their teams next season.

Jason’s honours to date are:

• Superleague Winners Medal – 2013

• Superleague Player of the Year – 2012

Mike Hickey

Mike is currently the Assistant Coach with the Irish Men’s Premier League Select team.

His qualifications are as follows:

CYBEX International UK, a leading manufacturer of premium exercise equipment, has installed a range of strength and functional training equipment in the new performance training area at Shannon Swimming & Leisure Centre.

“Following extensive renovations in 2010 to our existing gym, we witnessed a significant increase in our membership and consequently started to look at the possibility of expanding our strength training offering, where the demand seemed to be,” explained Karl Fogarty, manager of Shannon Leisure Centre.

“The new equipment was put out to tender and Cybex came out on top, offering us the best overall package to deliver a fresh, exciting look to our new gym space.”

The gym includes Bravo Functional Trainers, half racks, adjustable and flat benches, dip chin and leg raise, t-bar row and plate loaded equipment. Free weights and dumbbells were also installed by functional training equipment provider Jordan Fitness.

Detailed product training was also provided to all gym staff and personal trainers by one of Cybex’s master trainers.

“The feedback from our members has been excellent and we’ve actually seen an increase in the number of our female gym goers introducing strength training into their workout programme since the new training area opened,” confirms Karl.

Not only is the new equipment highly durable and of excellent quality, it is very accessible; our staff work closely with members to ensure they understand how best to use the range of equipment on offer and as a result, we are witnessing our members getting more out of their workouts and introducing exercises that they wouldn’t have thought to previously.”

Small group training sessions of up to six members are also being run by the Centre’s fitness instructors, where members can benefit from one-to-one training and support.

Richard Purves, senior sales manager for Cybex International UK, said: “The new strength and conditioning gym has been a great addition to Shannon Leisure Centre and the growing membership numbers are proof of the facility’s popularity; we’re really pleased to see the positive impact that the equipment is already having on its members and their training programmes.”

The gym was part-funded by the LEADER Programme, run by Clare Local Development Company. Aimed at boosting recreation and tourism in support of the local economy, the scheme backs the development of new and existing facilities within Co. Clare.

As part of the Centre’s involvement in the community, the new gym is also used by local secondary school pupils as part of their school curriculum and by sports teams based at Shannon Leisure Centre and other nearby facilities.
